Our bread & butter is designing (or redesigning) & programming websites for businesses of various sizes. Our clients range from family-owned small businesses to large financial enterprises. Our projects include content management system-based sites built in WordPress and Drupal and Magento-based E-commerce sites.

These platforms are meant to be more user-friendly than a hard-coded HTML site, allowing a non-technical administrator to easily input and edit content, products, images, and text. Since we do not build cookie-cutter sites, each of our websites are unique and are built with customized backend functionality. There is a learning curve for our clients based on various factors including the technical proficiency, familiarity and comfort level of the designated site administrator in the company as well as the complexity of the theme and functionality of the site itself.

Once we have built your sparkling new, feature-rich website, think of it like a Ferrari. You will need to gain some skills in order to learn how to properly drive it without crashing. You will either need to dedicate some time to learning some new skills or you will have to set aside a monthly budget for site maintenance. Some of your maintenance options are:

  • We can manage content for you on a retainer or as-needed basis.
  • You can hire a dedicated part-time, full-time or freelance webmaster.
  • You can hire a brilliant young college graduate as your new online intern.
  • You can hire an offshore team that works the same crazy hours you do (because we don’t).
You can learn some basic HTML. Or go to the codex or help pages for the CMS we’ve installed for you (WordPress, Drupal, or Magento – all three have extensive help resources). Or, our favorite, when in doubt, type your question into Google and be amazed at the information that appears at your fingertips.

Let’s use another analogy: when you own a car, whether Ferrari or Toyota, it will require maintenance, such as oil changes, new tires, etc. Your website is no different. CMS platforms offer upgrades on a regular basis and you (or your webmaster) should be updating the CMS to the newest version. If your site has plugins, you need to upgrade those as well, but, a caveat here, you need to do a backup first (as a precaution), ideally also set up a dev or staging site (where you can practice and to test runs), then update each plugin one by one, and test to make sure the upgrade is compatible with the site and didn’t break the site.

Often, clients come to us pleading for emergency help, “Our website is broken! Please fix it immediately!” What we often find is a result of a mismatch from sites not upgraded conflicting with the hosting environment (which we do not control). Hosting is where your site lives and is provided by a hosting provider. There is hosting software running on the server where your website data is housed.

There are many sources of issues that can crop up from this nexus of the software powering your hosting server / setup & the software powering your website.

Sometimes databases become broken or corrupted, this can be due to problems arising from the maintenance (or lack thereof) of the hosting environment. Sometimes database issues are due to bugs in the original software of your site and can be repaired by database repair tools or upgrades.

Sometimes the problems are due to hacking, another case that underscores the vital importance of maintenance and regular updates to patch security holes. (Security & hacking is a whole ‘nother blog post!)

Finally, issues can be caused by someone maintaining your website but not following the CMS instructions. For example uploading non-supported content or an image size that “breaks” a page layout.

Our main point with this article is to enlighten you as to the various factors that can affect website function and performance – many of which are out of our direct control (hosting environment, your technical competency, whether your website software is updated, hacking).

Here are the basic points to keep in mind before you commit to a big website overhaul or development project:

Understand that the website is never “done.” It will require ongoing attention and care post-launch for the life of the website

Different things can and will go awry unexpectedly for various reasons. Some are preventable, to a degree. Some are not – be prepared.

Set aside budget for a development or “dev” site or a “staging” site that will be a clone of your website and provides a practice area for you as well as a copy of your site.

Commit to a regular backup & restore plan. Ask your hosting company how often they backup hosted websites.

Use a 3rd party to backup your code (codeguard.com or something similar) and/or select a hosting company specific to your CMS (WordPress hosting, magento hosting, etc. It costs more but it may save you in the long run.

Commit additional resources post launch to website maintenance – either money for an external webmaster or identify and train an in-house manager.

Understand that there is a learning curve to managing a robust website.

There are alternatives!

If, after reading this, you realize that you or your small company is not prepared for the ongoing skill, time, and budget investment a robust website or e-commerce website requires, then there other routes you can take. There are plenty of hosted, templated website companies out there (Wix.com, Shopify.com, WordPress.com) that can host and support a simple website with pre-existing templates. Even your hosting company may offer a simple website solution. Why should you use these? They are totally managed by the company that hosts them, upgrades, security, 24/7 customer service.

 If you want a website with a unique, branded design and functionality, and your custom URL (not always available with hosted solutions), then you may not get what you want out of an out-of-the-box solution. The websites and work we offer includes: mobile application design, responsive design (mobile-optimized), customized e-commerce solutions, corporate branding, SEO and marketing strategy and more.  Also, some of the hosted solutions offer limited functionality & themes and they don’t all work on mobile devices.

So think strategically about your commitment to a long-term sustainable, scalable web strategy and ask yourself some tough questions about your priorities before launching into a custom-built solution.

It is becoming more and more apparent that small business owners invest in Local SEO for 2013 and beyond. Need a little bit of convincing? Check out some of our previous blog posts below that go in depth on its given topic:

Today is an overview on how a Small Business Owner (SMB for future reference) can take a handle on there own marketing efforts for local search. For detailed how-to’s, subscribe to our email list as new how-to’s are rolled out weekly to show you what to do.

A fair portion of local SEO isn’t hard, other parts are, the only parts of local search engine optimization that may require an experienced local search marketer is regarding onsite optimization and link building. If you know how to do basic HTML, that’s a good start and you should be able to do your own Local SEO.
Step 1 – Think like your customer:

This involves keyword research. Get on the web and start typing in search queries that you think your customers would be typing in to find your product or service. This is a start. There are a plethora or keyword research tools out there but here are two that I use regularly (there will be how-to’s on these in the near future):

Step 2 – Create social profiles:

What do Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Pinterest have use for in local SEO? Social signals, meaning how many shares, retweets, likes, etc a page or a blog post receives the better your chances of getting that page ranked. Not to mention that Facebook recently unveiled Facebook Graph Search that might become a popular search service in the future. There are also quite a few local directories that also allow you to add your social profile URL’s into your listings information. The more information we can add, the better. Here are links to creating social profiles (how-to’s on each coming soon):
Facebook
YouTube
Pinterest
Twitter
Google+-Create a personal Google+ account
LinkedIn -You need to create a personal LinkedIn account first
Step 3 – Create a NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) doc:

A NAP document is going to make your life a lot easier, and its also going to make it easier for search engines to match up data about your address. A NAP document should contain the following:
  • Company Name
  • Address
  • Phone Number (local preferred)
  • Website URL – include http://www.
  • Hours of operation
  • Company Tagline/Motto
  • Year Established
  • Categories – 5 max
  • Short Description – 150 characters max
  • Long Description – 800 characters max
  • Special Associations and Rewards
  • Brands Carried
  • Social URL’s: See step 2
  • Logo and other photos – .jpg or .png

After you have filled out your NAP document, save it somewhere safe on your computer for easy access in the future.
Step 4 – Citations, citations, citations

Think of citations as link building for an address. The more QUALITY citations you have consistent with your NAP, the more authority Google and other search engines will give to your business address, and the more likely your company will rank for the keywords you are trying to rank for.
There are a ton of directories to choose from and there are a few tools out there to help point you in the right direction of quality local directories, not all local directories are created equal. The only tool I recommend for finding citations, besides the list I already have, is the Whitespark Citation Finder Tool. It’s robust and works like a charm.
Step 5 – Reviews, yay or nay?

Reviews do matter. But it’s also important how you obtain these reviews from customers. Offering a customer or giving your customer an incentive to leave a review for your business is a violation of most local directory’s, including Google+ Local’s, terms of service. There are several different ways to obtain reviews from clients and we will dive into them in the near future with a detailed how-to.
Step 6 – Onsite Optimization:

You can have a high authority with search engines with your company NAP, but if your site isn’t optimized then achieving the rankings you want aren’t going to happen, they might, but highly doubtful. Here are a few tips to help:
Create a unique title tag for each page of the site
Title tags should be a max of 70 characters, and contain 1 main keyword and the company name
The title tag should accurately reflect the content on the page
Create a custom meta description for each page
Add your NAP to every page of the website
Add some internal links
Re-evaluate your content, try to make it more local
Add Google+ authorship markup
Add Schema.org microdata
Add a blog to your website

Each one of the listed items above will have a blog post going into greater detail in the future, this is just an outline of things to consider.
Step 7 – Ready, Set, Get Blogging:

The old adage with SEO of Content is King is true, and true for a reason. Google loves quality, authoritative, shareable content. Having a blog on your website gives you a platform to speak to your potential audience. Each blog post you write has a chance of ranking for the main keyword or what the topic of the blog post is about. A problem with most when it comes to blogging, myself included, are these 3 questions:
What do you blog about?
How often do you blog?

Website Maintenance | "301 Redirect or URL Cannibalization – Which One Should You Use?"

URL Cannibalization refers to the process of choosing the best URL among a number of available options with reference to home pages. You can come up with several URL addresses all expressing the same thing. Google then selects that which best represent the whole set, this is what is simply known as canonization of the URL. Redirection which can be sometimes called URL forwarding refers to the www technique of availing one single web address under many different URL addresses. 301 redirection is thus referred to the permanent movements from previously requested website address.


It is important that you ensure it is able to choose the URL address that you want through maintaining consistency by using the same URL across the entire site. Avoid splitting links to different addresses. To further ensure that the address you prefer is picked, you need to ensure that you have a web server which acts to make 301 redirects in case different addresses are requested from that which you intend to make canonical. This is also a very positive move if your site experiences frequent changes from time to time.

URL canonization can either be www or non-www that a designer should pick and stick with to the end. With differential trials in the market, most web designers agree that it is best to canonize your URL rather than conduct a 301 redirect. This is because of the dangers involved with redirection. One could lose all their hard work and attained rankings over the years because of a mistake that occurred by lack of identification and recognition while forwarding. You will have to spend a lot of time asking users who search you using the already abolished site to re-link with you on your main domain, a process that is cumbersome.

Local SEO In Florida | "4 Powerful Local SEO and Content Marketing Strategies No One is Talking About"

Ever since Panda and Penguin, Local SEO has become more and more of a challenge for businesses. Not only do they need to target what is in some cases many location-based keywords, but they need to do it without sounding like they’re schlepping Google with an abundance of out-of-place Local SEO phrases. Truth be told, the information that I’ve seen around the web on this subject of how to combine SEO with Content Marketing (Search Content Marketing) on the local level is seriously lacking.


But that’s going to change today, because the Lion has some pretty dang cool stuff to share 


Like everything that has to do with great content marketing, the key to all of this comes back to thinking like a consumer and being willing to answer their questions. Although this may sound easy, many folks are scared to death of such a task once push comes to shove, as you’ll soon see.

This being said, the stuff I’m getting ready to show in today’s article is for companies that are interested in the bottom-line results, and not those that base their marketing strategies on how “business has always been done…”

Sound Good? Then let’s get to it…

1. Focusing on Local Laws, Ordinances, etc.:

Although this will certainly not apply to all types of businesses, it does with many. If the process of buying your service or product requires any approval whatsoever, then you need to be the one writing about this. Let me give you an example.

For my swimming pool company, every one of our customers has to deal with zoning and setback laws with respect to where they are allowed to put their pool in their yard. Knowing that this is a major question/concern that potential pool owners have, I decided to run a series of blog posts on my site that addressed the zoning regulations of each county (in Maryland and Virginia) we do business in. Because each county has their own regulations and because pool shoppers generally type in something like “Chesterfield County Swimming Pool Laws” or “Frederick County Swimming Pool Setbacks” I went ahead and wrote a separate article on each county. In order to make sure I was as successful as possible from a search engine standpoint, I included in each title the major phrases that someone might type in. For example, the following post was entitled: Powhatan Va Swimming Pool Zoning, Permitting, and Setback Laws


Articles like this are easy to write and can get tremendous results
As you can see, the post addresses multiple keyword phrases that someone (from Powhatan) researching a swimming pool might type in, and it’s also written in a very clear, educational manner. Considering so very many businesses deal with county/state laws and regulations when selling their product or service, this technique can be a major Local SEO success, just as the article above ranked on the first page of Google for every major keyword phrase we were initially targeting, shown here:



2. Write “Who is the Best______________?” Articles

Think about it for a second: How often, when searching for a local business, do you go to Google and type in, “Who is the best ______________ company in [my town]?”

Chances are, if you’re like most of the digital world, you’ve done this many, many times. So have your customers. In order to address this critical customer question, you may want to consider taking every major town you work in and write an article addressing this critical question. I’ve done multiple “Best of [location]” articles and every single one of them ranks on the first page of Google and have generated critical traffic, leads, and sales that have benefitted my business. Here is an example for Virginia Beach:


By addressing a simple question for different areas, you’ll likely get great results.
Now you may be asking the best way to write this type of article (Actually, I’m sure you’re asking that question by now  ) Well, my answer to this is to literally pick a group of your competitors that that have a solid history of business in your area and list them, without listing yourself, as I’ll now explain in #3.

3. Write “Best of” Posts that also Review Your Local Competitors

OK, now comes the part that makes people scratch their head, but if you look at it from an intelligent business standpoint and get rid of all your “old school/secret sauce” mentality, I think you’ll get what I’m saying here.

Fact is, your potential clients are vetting you and your competitors all the time. They are going to Google and typing in phrases like “Reviews of [your competitor]” and 99.9% of the time, some awful 3rd party review site is the one controlling this conversation. I noticed this trend a couple of years ago and decided to start optimizing for my competitors keyword phrases when a prospect was vetting them online. To do this, my approach was something no one had ever done before online(I don’t say this to brag, it’s just the truth)—I made a “best of” list that included 5 competitors I respected, briefly described their company, and did NOT include myself in these “best of” lists.

Why did I not include myself in these lists?

Because if I had, I would have lost all credibility, and at that point there is no trust with the reader.

Instead, I chose honesty and transparency, and because of this, I now rank for a slew of my competitors phrases, as you can see here:


Now, when customers are vetting my competition, they’re reading my articles.
When I’ve presented this principle at conferences around the world, occasionally audience members want to know if I’m worried about losing a sale because I’ve now introduced my competitors to my readers.

My answer to this question is simple: NO

I say that because in this age of easy information, it’s NAÏVE to think for one second that our potential customers haven’t already vetted our competition, or that they won’t at some point.

The fact is, when it comes to great content marketing (especially search content marketing), I don’t care about my competition. They aren’t the ones I’m trying to have a conversation with. And ultimately, that’s what this is about—controlling where the conversation takes place.

This one single article made over $150,000 in sales last year for my swimming pool company, and it’s also one of the biggest reasons the New York Times ran their article last week on our transparent approach to answering customer questions.

Again, stop fearing the competition and start fearing what will happen if you ignore the customer.

4. Write “Best of” (or worst of) Posts about Related Industries to Yours

This is a tremendous technique that very, very few people do, but it works quite well. Let’s pretend you’re a real-estate agent in Austin Texas for a minute. What are some typical “best of” questions potential clients (people that are moving to Austin from another area) would ask? Here is a small list:

What are the best school systems in Austin?
What are the best restaurants in Austin?
What are the best neighborhoods to live in in Austin Texas?
What are the worst school systems in Austin?
Do you see how this works? If someone is moving to the town, they very likely want to know these things, and there is also a very good chance each person asking these questions could be a potential client for that agent.


When companies think outside the box and produce content about their area, branding and networking experience growth as well.
Let’s do one more example just so as to make sure everyone completely understands this. Let’s say you have a pet-sitting business in Washington DC. An example of some indirect “best of” articles would be:

Who are the top veterinarian clinics in Washington DC?
Where are the best dog kennels located in Washington DC?
What are the top dog grooming/spa companies in Washington DC?
Writing these types of articles not only do great from an SEO standpoint, but they also help you become a brand/thought-leader in your local area, as many of these businesses will be thrilled with your positive discussion of them on your site and possibly send you more referrals because of it. (This is also known as “Networking  )

Some of you may be questioning the efficacy of these techniques, but let me stress this: They work in all types of industries, in all parts of the world. Whether you’re B2B, B2C–it doesn’t matter. I say this because I’ve not just done this stuff with my companies, but certainly with my clients, and I’ve  got an incredibly diverse group of clients right now.

When all is said and done, our challenge is a simple one my friends: Think outside the box. Reward those in  your town and city. Talk about them. Think like a consumer. Good things will happen.

What is SEO, Exactly?

The goal of foundational SEO isn't to cheat or "game" the search engines. The purpose of SEO is to:

1. Your Website is Like a Cake

Your links, paid search, and social media acts as the icing, but your content, information architecture, content management system, and infrastructure act as the sugar and makes the cake. Without it, your cake is tasteless, boring, and gets thrown in the trash.

2. What Search Engines Are Looking For

Search engines want to do their jobs as best as possible by referring users to websites and content that is the most relevant to what the user is looking for. So how is relevancy determined?
  • Content: Is determined by the theme that is being given, the text on the page, and the titles and descriptions that are given.
  • Performance: How fast is your site and does it work properly?
  • Authority: Does your site have good enough content to link to or do other authoritative sites use your website as a reference or cite the information that's available?
  • User Experience: How does the site look? Is it easy to navigate around? Does it look safe? Does it have a high bounce rate?

3. What Search Engines Are NOT Looking For

Search engine spiders only have a certain amount of data storage, so if you're performing shady tactics or trying to trick them, chances are you're going to hurt yourself in the long run. Items the search engines don't want are:
  • Keyword Stuffing: Overuse of keywords on your pages.
  • Purchased Links: Buying links will get you nowhere when it comes to SEO, so be warned.
  • Poor User Experience: Make it easy for the user to get around. Too many ads and making it too difficult for people to find content they're looking for will only increase your bounce rate. If you know your bounce rate it will help determine other information about your site. For example, if it's 80 percent or higher and you have content on your website, chances are something is wrong.

4. Know Your Business Model

While this is pretty obvious, so many people tend to not sit down and just focus on what their main goals are. Some questions you need to ask yourself are:
  • What defines a conversion for you?
  • Are you selling eyeballs (impressions) or what people click on?
  • What are your goals?
  • Do you know your assets and liabilities?

5. Don't Forget to Optimize for Multi-Channels

Domain naming is so important to your overall foundation, so as a best practice you're better off using sub-directory root domains (example.com/awesome) versus sub-domains (awesome.example.com). Some other best practices with domain names are:
  • Consistent Domains: If you type in www.example.com, but then your type in just example.com and the "www" does not redirect to www.example.com, that means the search engines are seeing two different sites. This isn't effective for your overall SEO efforts as it will dilute your inbound links, as external sites will be linking to www.example.com and example.com.
  • Keep it Old School: Old domains are better than new ones, but if you're buying an old domain, make sure that the previous owner didn't do anything shady to cause the domain to get penalized.
  • Keywords in URL: Having keywords you're trying to rank for in your domain will only help your overall efforts.

7. Optimizing for Different Types of Results

In addition to optimizing for the desktop experience, make sure to focus on mobile and tablet optimization as well as other media.
  • Create rich media content like video, as it's easier to get a video to rank on the first page than it is to get a plain text page to rank.
  • Optimize your non-text content so search engines can see it. If your site uses Flash or PDFs, make sure you read up on the latest best practices so search engines can crawl that content and give your site credit for it.

8. Focus on Your Meta Data Too

Your content on your site should have title tags and meta descriptions.
  • Meta keywords are pretty much ignored by search engines nowadays, but if you still use them, make sure it talks specifically to that page and that it is also formatted correctly.
  • Your meta description should be unique and also speak to that specific page. Duplicate meta descriptions from page to page will not get you anywhere.
Title tags should also be unique! Think your title as a 4-8 word ad, so do your best to entice the reader so they want to click and read more.
